By default, Telegram uses the front camera when you record a video message — so your face is in the frame. But sometimes you want to show what's happening around you, not yourself. The good news: switching to the rear camera is easy, and you don't even have to stop recording.
I’ve prepared two methods for you — “On the Fly” for quick, dynamic shots, and “The Smart Way” for more control.
This is the fastest method when you want to quickly switch from yourself to the world around you.
1. 🎙️ Activate video message mode.
Open any chat and tap the microphone icon next to the text input field. It will instantly turn into a camera icon.
2. 🟢 Start recording.
Press and hold the camera icon. Your „circle“ video is now recording. Keep your finger down!
3. 🔄 Switch cameras without lifting your finger.
While
still holding the camera icon, look for the camera‑switch icon (usually
in the bottom‑left corner). Tap it — the preview will immediately
switch from the front to the rear camera.
Pro tip: If you want to pause but keep recording, just swipe your finger upward. Recording will lock, freeing your hands.
4. ✅ Finish recording.
Release the camera icon to stop and send the video message.
This method is perfect when you need to react to something around you in a split second.
I recommend this method when you need to prepare your shot and want to be sure of the result.
1. 🎙️ Activate and set up the camera.
As in the first method, tap the microphone icon in the chat to switch to camera mode. But this time, don’t hold it down.
2. 🔄 Switch to the rear camera before recording.
Tap the camera‑switch icon. Make sure the viewfinder shows what you want to record — the world around you.
3. 🟢 Lock recording (hands‑free mode).
Press and hold the camera icon, then, without releasing, swipe your finger upward on the screen. You’ll see a lock icon. Recording will continue without you holding the button.
4. ✂️ Edit (optional).
When
you’re done, tap the square with the circle (or the arrow, depending on
your version) to stop recording. You’ll enter the editor, where you can
trim the beginning or end and preview the result.
5. 📤 Send.
Once everything looks perfect, tap the send button.
This method is invaluable when you need a high‑quality result — for a blog or an important message.
Video messages are compressed by default, but there’s a hidden feature that makes them noticeably better. It works on both Android and iOS.
Go to Settings in Telegram.
Scroll down and find “Telegram for …” (the app version line).
Tap and hold on that line several times. A hidden developer menu will appear.
Turn on the toggle for “Use Camera 2 API”.
This option enables more advanced camera access on your phone, improving detail and overall video quality.
Recording a video message using the rear camera in Telegram is very simple. And with these small tricks, you can do it even more effectively — whether you need to react quickly to what’s happening around you or carefully plan every frame.
